FAQs

Find answers to frequently asked questions by our customers.

What is the difference between out of gauge and overweight freight?

Out of gauge refers to cargo that exceeds standard container dimensions (too tall, wide, or long). Overweight refers to cargo that exceeds standard weight limits but may fit within normal container dimensions. Some shipments can be both. Everlast Logistics handles both types — OOG through our out of gauge services and overweight loads through our tri-axle and heavy haul services.

Does Everlast Logistics handle permits for oversized loads?

Yes. Our team manages the planning and compliance requirements for OOG shipments, including route assessment to ensure safe passage, coordination of any required permits, and compliance with weight and dimension regulations. We provide expert solutions with meticulous care from pickup to delivery.

Are there additional costs for shipping out of gauge cargo?

Yes. OOG shipments typically carry surcharges because they require specialized equipment, additional handling, custom securing, and may occupy space that would otherwise hold standard containers (known as "lost slot" fees). Permits may also be required depending on the route. Contact us at 908-588-7300 for a detailed OOG quote.

What information do I need to provide for an OOG shipment quote?

To quote an OOG shipment, we'll need a description of the cargo, exact dimensions (length x width x height), weight, pickup and delivery locations, photos or drawings showing the center of gravity and lifting points (if available), and any special handling instructions. The more detail you provide, the more accurate your quote will be.

What types of equipment are used for OOG shipments?

OOG cargo typically requires specialized equipment such as flat rack containers (with collapsible end walls and open sides for side-loading), open-top containers (for top-loading with cranes), and step-deck or lowboy trailers for over-height cargo. Everlast Logistics will assess your shipment dimensions and recommend the right equipment for safe, compliant transport.

What is out of gauge (OOG) cargo?

Out of gauge cargo refers to shipments that exceed the standard dimensions of a 20-foot or 40-foot shipping container — typically anything taller than 2.59 meters (8.5 feet), wider than 2.33 meters (7.6 feet), or longer than 12.05 meters (39.5 feet). Common examples include heavy machinery, construction equipment, industrial components, and large manufactured goods.
